PayExpress, Inc. Innovations

PayExpress has been innovating new compute technology solutions for over 36 years.

PayExpress is a technology startup that had its genesis when the PC was only 5 years old, car phones were in bags, and the Internet was just a dream. Founder David Smith brought together a small team of new college graduates dedicated to creating a way to build and deliver software in the age of floppy disks and MS-DOS.

Technology has come a long way since those days. PayExpress has continued to innovate with new products and solutions. Over the years, PayExpress has fueled four major applications that have been widely distributed.

1099/W2 Filer

First published in 1987, 1099/W2 Filer was widely sold to accounting professionals. 1099/W2 Filer was one of the very first software applications marketed as a "freeium" application. After five years, the Filer product line was sold and remained the most widely used stand-alone 1099/W2 application for more than a decade.

eCheck

PayExpress was a significant contributor to the U.S Treasury eCheck project. The Federal Reserve, national banks, and international technology companies came together to create a digital infrastructure design that would obsolete paper checks. While the project itself was ahead of its time, PayExpress proved the validity of eCheck during an Australian central bank pilot project. Founder David Smith discovered significant innovations to remove liability barriers in using digital certificates and to provide robust message queuing and delivery necessary for payments on the open Internet.

MyCheckWriter

MyCheckWriter was first published in 1998 as way for businesses to print paper checks without having to buy pre-printed check stock. One of its major innovations was the creation of a Windows printer driver that could capture a check on the way to the printer and refomat it with banking information to print on generic check stock. MyCheckWriter was sold direct and through the retail channel on shelves in national software technology stores.

PDF Complete

PDF Complete is a PDF document creation and editing application that was pre-installed on Hewlett-Packard business and personal computers from 2003 to 2014. PDF Complete was localized into 35 languages so that new HP customers could read documentation without having to first install a PDF reader application. PayExpress contributed key technology to PDF Complete. At the pincacle of HP distribution, PDF Complete was installed on about 50 million desktops worldwide. PDF Complete has gained an enormous customer base and continues to this day.

Today, PayExpress continues to be involved in innovating new compute technology solutions.

Founder David Smith is an entrepreneurial technology leader that is experienced in software innovation as demonstrated by user and connected server applications that have been deployed to 50+ million users. His innovation in liquid-cooled sealed computing has resulted in 14 issued patents to date. Patented innovations include liquid immersion cooling of electronics, distributed digital storage solutions, direct-to-disk cooling of hard disk drives, and subsurface installation of computing. He is continuing to innovate in single-phase immersion cooling, cryptographic protocols for auditable anonymous systems, dynamic assignment of digital credentials for messaging, and digital messaging in degraded communication environments.

PayExpress continues to play a role in bringing new products to market based on these continuing innovations. Next generation prototypes of immersion cooling are currently under construction. The current focus is on two-phase immersion cooling in artificial intellgence applications and single phase immersion cooling for low-power and digital storage applications. Over the next few years, a number of new products and services will arise from the innovative work by David Smith and PayExpress.
